Sicily imposes heat alert and midday work ban to prevent wildfires

The Sicilian regional Civil Protection agency issued a pre‑alert for wildfire risk on Thursday, June 11, covering all provinces of the island. The notice urges citizens, farmers and hikers to avoid open flames, discard cigarette butts properly and report any signs of fire as high temperatures and dry vegetation increase the danger of rapid fire spread.

Simultaneously, Regional President Renato Schifani signed an urgent ordinance that suspends outdoor work between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in zones identified as high‑risk for heat stress. The ban applies to construction, agriculture, quarrying, logistics and also to bicycle couriers (riders). It remains in force until 31 August, with exemptions for public‑service entities, emergency operations and civil‑protection activities, while employers must adopt safety measures under Italy’s workplace‑safety legislation.
