Sicily issues orange fire alert as record heat hits Palermo and western towns

On June 21, regional authorities in Sicily declared an orange‑level fire‑risk alert for Palermo and several western municipalities as temperatures peaked at 33 °C. The Civil Protection agency warned that the combination of extreme heat, low rainfall and wind increases the likelihood of rapid fire spread, especially near residential areas, roads and natural sites.

Approximately 300 volunteer firefighters were on standby to support the regular fire brigade and forest guards, with the capacity to be reinforced if needed. Officials urged residents to report any suspicious activity, noting that arson often contributes to wildfires. Environmental groups called for immediate checks and clear accountability, emphasizing the fragile condition of the region during this pre‑alert phase.
