Sicily implements airfare discounts, rail upgrades, and tax incentives

The Sicilian regional government has announced several initiatives to improve connectivity and economic growth. To combat high travel costs caused by the island's geographic isolation, authorities have extended airfare discounts for residents through November 30. The program includes new agreements with Wizz Air and potential route expansions with Aeroitalia, supported by an annual budget of 13.5 million euros for the 2026-2028 period.

Simultaneously, significant railway infrastructure upgrades are scheduled between October 2026 and January 2027 on the Messina-Catania-Siracusa line. These works, which include the Augusta railway bypass and the Gornalunga variant, will necessitate the suspension of train services between Catania and Siracusa, as well as parts of the Catania-Caltagirone route. During this period, Trenitalia will provide replacement bus services for regional and Intercity lines.

On the economic front, Sicily is pursuing internationalization strategies, including a mission to the United States to attract investment and support local businesses. Additionally, the region is introducing tax incentives to encourage residents living abroad to return, offering up to a 50% reduction in personal income tax (Irpef) for three years, contingent on property acquisition or renovation.
