Sicily political landscape shifts ahead of regional elections

Political maneuvering is intensifying ahead of the upcoming Sicilian regional elections. Cateno De Luca, leader of Sud chiama Nord, has outlined a strategy involving four distinct lists aimed at creating an autonomist, civic, and progressive political project. He expressed openness to participating in primary elections to challenge existing coalitions.

Nello Musumeci, the Minister for Civil Protection, addressed the center-right coalition's candidate selection process during a political tour in Catania. Musumeci stated that the decision regarding the next regional president rests with the coalition's leadership and emphasized that there is no longer an automatic rule favoring incumbent candidates. He also questioned the claims made by Forza Italia regarding their right to nominate the candidate.

In addition to political shifts, Musumeci addressed infrastructure concerns, specifically regarding the Fontanarossa airport. He argued that the facility faces structural and geographic limitations that prevent it from becoming an intercontinental hub. To mitigate the impact of volcanic ash from Mount Etna on air travel, he suggested developing a structured strategy that includes Comiso airport as a primary alternative to manage traffic disruptions.
