Sicily pushes ahead with large public‑housing construction for displaced families

The regional commission led by President Renato Schifani and sub‑commissioner Santi Trovato reported that the Fondo Basile/De Pasquale site is on track to deliver 60 new residential units for families from former shantytowns. Funding covers 80 % of the structural work, with 35 % of overall works already completed. By September the fourth and final structural frame is expected, and full completion is scheduled for February 2027.

A parallel project at the Fondo Saccà area will add 32 innovative, environmentally‑sustainable apartments. Foundations have been finished and work on the elevation elements has begun, with an anticipated delivery in March‑April 2027. In the past month the commission handed over 15 renovated apartments to ArisMe and, between 4 June and 10 July, delivered another 23 units to families formerly living in the shantytown. The works involve companies Invitalia, Rubner Holzbau, Cosedil and others, with a total contract value of about €12.3 million plus safety costs.
