Sicily wildfire crisis triggers blackouts and agricultural damage

Since January 2026, Sicily has suffered 328 deliberately set wildfires that have burned 24,451 hectares – about 70% of the total area burned in southern Italy. The most intense week (15‑21 July) saw 87 fires destroy 16,834 ha. The emergency has required more than 1,400 fire‑fighter interventions, including 240 in Agrigento, and the deployment of hundreds of firefighters, Canadair aircraft and civil‑protection units. A fire‑fighter, Alessandro Marchì, died on duty.

The blazes have devastated agriculture and livestock, destroying pastures, forages and rural infrastructure across the Monti Sicani and other communes. Local authorities have set up a joint emergency coordination unit and are seeking emergency aid, immediate forage collection, and recognition of a state of natural disaster.

Extreme heat has also strained the electric grid. Prolonged blackouts have hit thousands of residents in Palermo, Siracusa and other cities, with some areas without power for more than 24 hours. Officials and utility companies say the high temperatures, drought and fire‑related safety shut‑offs are exceeding the network’s capacity, prompting calls for grid reinforcement and better resilience measures.
