Sicily Regional Assembly approves tax debt relief scheme

The Sicilian Regional Assembly has passed a law allowing taxpayers in Sicily to settle outstanding regional taxes, including vehicle taxes, by paying only the principal amount without penalties or interest. The programme applies to all regional revenues and taxes unpaid by 31 December 2025, with a deadline for participation set for 31 October 2026. The amendment was led by Ignazio Abbate, president of the Institutional Affairs Committee, who highlighted that the measure will unlock cases where regional, national, and vehicle taxes have been combined, freeing many indebted municipalities.

Implementation details will be defined in a decree to be issued within 30 days by the regional economy assessor, after publication in the Official Gazette of the Sicilian Region. Once the decree is in force, eligible debtors can apply for the relief.

The law mirrors national provisions from the 199‑2025 legislation and aims to provide a concrete financial breathing‑room for both private taxpayers and financially strained local authorities.
