Sicily regional assembly faces political jockeying and legislative surge

During the summer break of the Sicilian Regional Assembly (ARS), parties are scrambling to position themselves for the upcoming regional presidential election. Four candidates have emerged: centre‑right leader Cateno De Luca and centre‑left figure Ismaele La Vardera, among others. The period has also seen a sharp rise in oral parliamentary questions, with 3,633 submitted so far, highlighting procedural tensions.

In the past year the ARS has markedly increased its legislative output, presenting 1,194 bills and passing 113 laws, a rise over the previous legislature. Only one of 34 approved laws was challenged by the national government, indicating reduced conflict. Financially, the assembly secured €4.8 billion for the 2025‑2028 period, cut the deficit from €‑6.97 billion to €‑4.13 billion, and posted a €2.15 billion surplus in 2024, freeing up resources for future budgets.
