Sicily faces urgent calls for climate adaptation and environmental protection

Sicily is facing mounting environmental challenges, prompting calls for urgent structural interventions. Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, president of the UniVerde Foundation, has advocated for an extraordinary climate adaptation plan to address increasing risks of drought, flash floods, wildfires, and desertification across the island.

Key priorities for such a plan include reducing water loss, reusing wastewater for agriculture, strengthening fire prevention, and developing renewable energy. Recent extreme weather events in Marsala, Lipari, Catania, and Messina have underscored the need for coordinated action between the national government and regional authorities.

In other environmental developments, the municipality of Petrosino has requested a national state of emergency following a violent meteorological event on October 9. Additionally, regional deputy Carlo Auteri has formally challenged the Ministry of Environment regarding the establishment of the Iblei National Park, citing unresolved hydrogeological risks and non-compliant wastewater treatment plants. Concerns have also been raised by Federparchi Sicilia regarding a proposed waste disposal site near the Cavagrande Nature Reserve in Noto.
