Sicily environmental policy and park establishment

Overview

Discussions regarding the establishment of the Parco degli Iblei in Sicily have faced opposition from local authorities. The Sicilian Regional Assembly's IV Commission on Environment, Territory, and Mobility called for a new phase of consultation, with commission president Giuseppe Carta warning that the current proposal risks causing “irreparable damage to the economic development of the area.”

Regional deputy Carlo Auteri has challenged the Ministry of Environment over the park's establishment, citing unresolved hydrogeological risks and non-compliant wastewater treatment plants.

Broader environmental concerns in Sicily have intensified, leading to calls for an extraordinary climate adaptation plan to address drought, wildfires, and desertification. Following extreme weather events, the municipality of Petrosino requested a national state of emergency, while other regional concerns have emerged regarding proposed waste disposal sites near nature reserves.
