Sicily transport strike announced for October 16 to 22
Sicilian transport companies have announced a major strike scheduled from October 16 to October 22, 2026. The mobilization, which includes both independent hauliers and large firms represented by Confindustria Catania, aims to protest rising operational costs, specifically the surge in diesel prices. Diesel costs have risen by approximately 35 cents per liter since February, exceeding 2.16 euros per liter in September.
Industry representatives warn that the strike could lead to significant supply chain disruptions. The Committee of Sicilian Hauliers has cautioned that supermarkets could face shortages of essential goods and fresh products within 48 hours of the stoppage. Beyond fuel costs, companies are also protesting the high expense of maritime transport and the delayed payment of Sea Modal Shift incentives.
Regional deputy Carlo Auteri has called for an urgent meeting between the Sicilian and national governments to address the crisis, noting that future subsidies may not provide the immediate relief required by businesses facing daily cost increases.
