Italy truck driver protests over fuel costs disrupt supply chains

Widespread protests by truck drivers and farmers across Southern Italy are causing significant disruptions to the country's supply chains. Driven by rising diesel prices and the high cost of living, demonstrators have implemented road and port blockades in regions including Calabria, Puglia, Campania, Sicily, and Molise.

The mobilization has led to visible shortages of essential goods, with reports of empty supermarket shelves, particularly in fresh produce, dairy, and bakery sections. The logistics crisis has also impacted industrial production; for instance, the Stellantis plant in Atessa has faced production halts due to component shortages, and the Laterlite company in Lentella is facing supply difficulties.

In response to the unrest, the Italian government is negotiating. While the Sicilian Transport Committee (CTS) has partially lifted its blockade to allow fruit and vegetable deliveries to resume, tensions remain high in Calabria, where Fedralog has pledged to continue its strike until October 27. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has scheduled meetings to discuss economic support, including potential diesel price reductions and the release of previously allocated funds.
