Sicily workplace accidents prompt union demands for safety

Two serious workplace accidents occurred in Sicily in August. A 52‑year‑old construction worker fell about three metres at a renovation site in Bolognetta, near Palermo, suffering a fractured right scapula and a mild head injury. He was taken to the Corleone hospital and remains under observation while authorities investigate compliance with safety regulations. Trade unions Cisl Palermo and Fillea Cgil condemned the incident and called for immediate corrective measures.

In Mazara del Vallo, Trapani, a 55‑year‑old worker fell from a ladder inside a wine cellar and was hospitalized in serious condition. Union leaders from Flai Cgil, Fai Cisl and Uila Trapani expressed solidarity with the victim and urged stronger inspection resources and concrete prevention actions across the agro‑food sector. Both incidents have revived calls for stricter occupational safety enforcement in the region.
