Sidya Touré, former Guinean Prime Minister, dies in Paris
Sidya Touré, the former Prime Minister of Guinea and president of the Union des Forces Républicaines (UFR), has died in Paris at the age of 81. He passed away on September 25 or 26, 2026, following a period of hospitalization.
Touré was a prominent political figure and technocrat who served as Prime Minister under President Lansana Conté following the military mutiny of February 1996. His tenure was noted for efforts to stabilize the economy, improve electricity access in Conakry, and restore relations with international financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank.
Following his time in government, Touré became a key leader of the opposition. He was a frequent presidential candidate and formed political alliances, most notably with Cellou Dalein Diallo of the UFDG. The two leaders shared a history of political struggle, including facing exile and political pressure.
Discussions regarding his burial are ongoing. While the Guinean government, represented by Prime Minister Bah Oury, has expressed a desire for him to be buried in Guinea, his family is reportedly considering Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, as a potential location.
