Death and funeral arrangements of Sidya Touré
Overview
Sidya Touré, the former Prime Minister of Guinea and leader of the Union des Forces Républicaines (UFR), died in Paris at the age of 81 on September 25, 2026. Touré, a prominent political figure and opposition leader, served as Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999 under President Lansana Conté.
Following his death, Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah led a government delegation to offer condolences on behalf of President Mamadi Doumbouya. While Guinean authorities expressed a desire for Touré to be buried in Guinea, his family chose Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, for the funeral services. This decision followed reports that the current government reclaimed his former family residence in Conakry. Members of the UFR described a return to Guinea as ‘inconceivable’ due to the ‘humiliations’ Touré faced from the government.
Touré had lived in exile in Côte d'Ivoire for nearly five years following the September 2021 coup in Guinea. He maintained deep ties to the country, having served as chief of staff for Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara during the 1990s.
After his remains arrived at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport on October 2, condolences were held in Cocody. On Thursday, October 8, Touré was buried at the Williamsville cemetery in Abidjan. The funeral ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé and Grand Chancellor Ally Coulibaly, as well as Guinean political figures such as Cellou Dalein Diallo and representatives from the UFR.
