Sidya Touré to be buried in Côte d'Ivoire

Sidya Touré, the former Guinean Prime Minister and prominent opposition leader, will be buried in Côte d'Ivoire. He passed away in Paris on September 25 at the age of 81.

His family has chosen Abidjan for the funeral, where Touré had lived in exile for nearly five years following the September 2021 coup in Guinea. His remains are expected to arrive at Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International Airport on Friday, October 2. Following his arrival, several days of condolences will be held at a family home in Cocody, with the burial scheduled for Thursday, October 8.

The decision to hold the funeral in Côte d'Ivoire follows a request from Guinean authorities, including Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah, who expressed a wish for Touré to be buried in his homeland. However, members of his former party, the Union des forces républicaines (UFR), described a return to Guinea as ‘inconceivable’ due to the ‘humiliations’ Touré faced from the Guinean government, including the confiscation of his residence.

Touré had deep professional and personal ties to Côte d'Ivoire, having served as chief of staff for Alassane Ouattara during the 1990s when Ouattara was Prime Minister. He previously served as Guinea's Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999 and was a presidential candidate in both 2010 and 2015.
