Siegfried Mureșan nominated as Romanian Prime Minister

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has nominated Siegfried Mureșan, a member of the European Parliament and the PNL, to serve as Prime Minister. The nomination follows the removal of Ilie Bolojan’s government via a motion of no confidence.

Mureșan has announced that he is beginning negotiations to form a pro-European government coalition consisting of the PNL, USR, and UDMR. He currently holds 169 votes from these parties but requires 233 to secure a parliamentary majority. Mureșan stated he is open to discussing a program with the PSD and national minority groups but emphasized he will not negotiate with or alter his pro-European program to accommodate the AUR party.

The presidential decree is expected to be signed on Saturday and published in the Official Gazette on Monday. Once published, Mureșan will have a 10-day constitutional window to present his cabinet and government program to Parliament. President Dan has called on all political parties to cooperate to resolve the ongoing political crisis and avoid the necessity of early elections.
