Siemens and OMV launch high-power electric truck charging station in Austria

Siemens and OMV have inaugurated the world’s first commercial charging station utilizing the SICHARGE FLEX system in Kufstein, Austria. Located on the Brenner route—a critical logistics corridor connecting Germany and Italy—the facility is designed to support the electrification of heavy-duty freight transport.

The high-performance system allows electric trucks to charge from 20% to 80% capacity in approximately 45 minutes, a duration that aligns with mandatory driver rest periods. This capability addresses a major hurdle in heavy transport decarbonization by minimizing additional downtime. The current configuration includes charging points for both passenger cars and trucks, with infrastructure prepared for future capacity expansion.

OMV, acting as both a charge point operator and mobility service provider, intends to develop similar installations across Austria as part of its energy transition strategy. The SICHARGE FLEX system offers modularity and scalability, with power outputs ranging from 480 kW to 1.68 MW to accommodate varying logistical requirements.
