Siemens Mobility wins 154 million EUR locomotive tender in Romania

A consortium led by Siemens Mobility has won a tender to supply 23 new electric locomotives for passenger rail transport in Romania. The project, valued at approximately 764.4 million RON (roughly 154 million EUR), was awarded by the Railway Reform Authority (ARF) following an evaluation of three competing bids.

The new locomotives will be equipped with European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) technology, capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h and hauling up to 16 passenger coaches. The contract also includes maintenance and repair services to ensure safe operation.

The initiative aims to modernize Romania's rail network by replacing high-emission, energy-intensive rolling stock with more efficient, low-carbon alternatives. Funding for the project is provided through the Modernisation Fund and the Romanian state budget via the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure. Implementation is expected to take 42 months, with the formal contract signing pending the expiration of the appeals period.
