Siemens Mobility wins contract for high-speed trains in Spain

Spanish national operator Renfe has awarded a contract to Siemens Mobility for the supply of up to 40 Velaro Novo high-speed trains. The deal includes a firm order for 30 seven-car electric multiple units (EMUs) at a cost of approximately €1.2 billion, with an option for 10 additional trains that could bring the total investment to €1.7 billion.

The new trains are designed to reach speeds of 350 km/h and will feature 520 seats across two classes. The Velaro Novo platform aims to provide 10% more capacity, weigh 15% less, and consume up to 30% less energy than previous generations. Key interior improvements include more multi-purpose areas for luggage, bicycles, and wheelchairs, as well as reversible seats and individual power outlets.

Siemens Mobility is expected to deliver the first five distributed-traction trains within approximately three and a half years of signing the contract, with the remaining units following within five years. The trains will be equipped with advanced technologies, including predictive diagnostics, automatic train protection, and emergency battery systems.
