Renfe Siemens high-speed train contract
Overview
Spanish national railway Renfe has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to supply Velaro Novo high-speed trains. The agreement involves a firm order for 30 seven-car electric multiple units at a cost of approximately €1.2 billion, with an option for 10 additional units that could increase the total investment to €1.7 billion.
The new trains are designed to reach speeds of 350 km/h and feature 520 seats. Technical specifications include a 15% reduction in weight, 10% more capacity, and up to 30% less energy consumption compared to previous generations. Interior amenities include reversible seats, individual power outlets, and increased space for luggage, bicycles, and wheelchairs.
Siemens Mobility is expected to deliver the first five units within approximately 40 months, with the full order completed within 62 months. The fleet modernization aims to help Renfe compete in a liberalized market.
