Siena celebrates centenary of Vico Alto water reservoir
The city of Siena and Acquedotto del Fiora held a ceremony on September 25 to celebrate the centenary of the Vico Alto reservoir. Inaugurated in 1926, the infrastructure remains a vital component of the city's water system, managing water sourced from the Vivo d’Orcia springs.
The event included historical contributions, speeches from Siena Mayor Nicoletta Fabio and Acquedotto del Fiora President Roberto Renai, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. The reservoir has a complex history, having been designed by Luciano Conti in 1905 and later modified by Mario Vanni before its official opening.
During World War II, the facility suffered significant damage during the German retreat in June 1944. It underwent reconstruction and testing between 1946 and 1948. Today, the reservoir supports approximately 280 kilometers of distribution network, serving roughly 22,000 users and distributing over 5.5 million cubic meters of water annually.
