Siena mayor Nicoletta Fabio backs Palio artwork and reviews race delay after heavy rain

Mayor Nicoletta Fabio said she has not seen anything requiring an immediate stance on the recent Palio of Provenzano race, adding that she will review the footage and listen to the captains before forming a judgment. She noted that the event ran smoothly overall, despite the postponement of the Carriera due to a sudden downpour on the night of July 1, and described the five‑day festivities as “almost perfect” in weather.

Fabio also condemned the personal attacks directed at artist Ismaele Nones, who created the Drappellone for the July 2 Palio. While acknowledging that the artwork can divide opinion, she stressed that criticism of the piece is acceptable, but harassment of the creator is not. She highlighted that the work complies with Palio regulations and reminded that non‑Sienese artists, such as Jim Dine and Jean‑Michel Folon, have previously contributed to the tradition.
