Siena Palio Drappellone sparks controversy over Madonna depiction

The Drappellone, the ceremonial cloth to be awarded at the Palio di Siena on August 16, has sparked controversy due to its artistic depiction of the Madonna. Created by Romanian artist Teodora Axente, the work commemorates the Assumption of Mary and the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Camollia.

Critics have described the depiction of the Virgin Mary as too androgynous and far removed from traditional religious and cultural canons. Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, Archbishop of Siena-Colle di Val d’Elsa-Montalcino, characterized the piece as ‘very dark’ and noted that it does not reflect the devotional expressions typically expected by the faithful.

While the Archbishop has received requests from citizens to withhold the religious blessing of the cloth, he stated he sees no reason to refuse the blessing of the assembly. However, he has expressed a desire to change the commissioning process, suggesting that religious authorities should consult with artists during the preparation phase to ensure works meet both artistic and spiritual expectations.
