Siena Palio Drappellone artistic controversy

The unveiling of the Drappellone, the ceremonial silk banner for the Palio di Siena, has triggered debate regarding its artistic depiction of the Madonna dell’Assunta. Created by Romanian artist Teodora Axente, the banner commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Camollia.

Critics and religious leaders have expressed concerns that the artwork deviates from traditional devotional canons. Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, the Archbishop of Siena-Colle di Val d’Elsa-Montalcino, described the piece as ‘very dark’ and noted that the depiction of the Virgin Mary’s face is ‘androgynous.’ While some citizens requested that the religious blessing of the cloth be withheld, the Archbishop stated he has no reason to refuse the blessing of the assembly, though he suggested reforms to the commissioning process to ensure religious authorities consult with artists during preparation.

Siena Mayor Nicoletta Fabio has defended the commission, stating she chose Axente for her ‘stunning mastery’ rather than any intent to provoke. Fabio expressed distress over the controversy, remarking that she felt as though she were being ‘put on a pillory’ and criticized the role of social media, which she suggested was bordering on defamation.

The Archdiocese of Siena, via the College of Correctors, noted that while they did not detect provocative intent from the artist, the situation highlights a ‘complex tension between artistic freedom and religious sensitivity.’ Mayor Fabio has since held discussions with Cardinal Lojudice regarding these conflicting perspectives.
