Siena Palio preparations: horse selections and new broadcast technology
Preparations are underway for the Palio di Siena scheduled for August 16, 2026. Following regulated trials in Piazza del Campo, the municipal veterinary commission has approved 35 horses for the Tratta on August 13. A total of 77 horses participated in the regulated trials, with eight horses granted direct entry to the Tratta.
In anticipation of the event, the official Drappellone, created by artist Teodora Axente, has been unveiled at Palazzo Pubblico. The artwork is dedicated to the Madonna dell’Assunta and commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Camollia.
For the television broadcast on La7, Gravity Media Italy will utilize twelve cameras, including a new microcamera positioned on the Verrocchio to provide a unique perspective of the starting area. Due to the medieval layout of Siena, the production will use a distributed technological system rather than traditional large mobile broadcast vans to preserve the city's historical integrity.
