Siena prepares for the Palio dell'Assunta horse race
The Palio dell'Assunta is set to take place in Siena's Piazza del Campo on Sunday, August 16. This historic equestrian event features ten Contrade—Selva, Chiocciola, Oca, Nicchio, Lupa, Istrice, Torre, Aquila, Onda, and Giraffa—competing for the Drappellone, an artwork by Teodora Axente.
Preparatory trials have already seen various results. The Torre Contrada, with jockey Giuseppe Zedde (Gingillo), won the fourth trial. Other notable performances include the Giraffa Contrada, which saw success with both the horses Euskaldi and Diamante Sauro during recent trials. The Chiocciola Contrada is looking to end a 27-year drought, relying on experienced jockey Jonatan Bartoletti (Scompiglio) riding the horse Arestetulesu.
The event is a major cultural tradition in Italy, with live coverage scheduled on La7 starting from 16:40, including the Corteo Storico and the race itself. The competition involves intense strategic maneuvering and physical skill on the tuff track of the Piazza.
