Palio di Siena 2026: horse selections, Tratta batteries and assignment details

The veterinary commission approved 34 horses for the Tratta, which was run in five batteries on Monday 29 June. The batteries determined the ten horses that would contest the Palio of 2 July 2026.

The selected horses and their ear numbers are: Eberardo (12), Diosu de Campeda (25), Volpino (37), Anda e Bola (48), Benitos (514), Donrodrigo (615), Viso d’Angelo (721), Canarinu (822), Diodoro (923) and Entu de P. Ulpu (1025).

The mayor of Siena, Nicoletta Fabio, assigned the horses to the ten contrade: Onda – Anda e Bola; Aquila – Diodoro; Oca – Benitos; Bruco – Donrodrigo; Leocorno – Volpino; Civetta – Viso d’Angelo; Valdimontone – Canarinu; Torre – Entu de P. Ulpu; Drago – Eberardo; Giraffa – Diosu de Campeda.

The Palio itself is scheduled for Thursday 2 July 2026, with a full programme of traditional rites, a procession of the drappellone, and the race dedicated to the Madonna of Provenzano. The event will be televised and the public can access the Piazza del Campo from via Dupré between 16:30 and 18:30.
