Siena Palio Drappellone sparks debate over Madonna's depiction

The Drappellone, the ceremonial silk banner awarded to the winning district of the Palio di Siena, has sparked debate following its unveiling. Created by Romanian artist Teodora Axente, the work is dedicated to the Madonna dell'Assunta and commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Camollia (1526).

Critics and religious figures have raised concerns regarding the aesthetic choices of the piece. Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, Archbishop of Siena, described the work as ‘very dark’ and noted that the depiction of the Virgin Mary’s face is ‘androgynous,’ deviating from traditional cultural and devotional canons. The Archbishop suggested that religious authorities should be consulted during the commission phase to avoid future controversies regarding the blessing of the banner in the Duomo.

The artwork features a pyramidal composition with the Virgin Mary at the top, surrounded by cherubim and fish, which serve as metaphors for the Sienese community. The background includes dark clouds evoking the historical battle, contrasted with light emanating from the Madonna. Despite the aesthetic disagreements, Cardinal Lojudice stated he has no reason to refuse the blessing of the banner.
