Sierra Leone identified as key drug trafficking transit hub by EU Parliament

The European Parliament has passed a resolution identifying Sierra Leone as a critical transit hub for drug trafficking in European waters. The resolution specifically highlights the case of Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, known as ‘Bolle Jos,’ who remains at large in Sierra Leone. Leijdekkers was sentenced in absentia by a Dutch court to 24 years in prison for large-scale cocaine trafficking and other crimes, with potential combined sentences in the Netherlands and Belgium reaching approximately 80 years.

To combat sophisticated smuggling networks using vessels like go-fast boats and semi-submersibles, the European Parliament is calling for enhanced judicial cooperation and maritime surveillance. Lawmakers urged the European Commission to expand support for West African nations through law enforcement assistance, capacity-building, and socio-economic investment.

In a related development, Dutch Justice and Security Minister David van Weel indicated that the Netherlands has been working through regional neighbors, including Liberia and Ghana, to pressure Sierra Leone to apprehend Leijdekkers. This regional pressure follows the interception of 237.6 kilograms of cocaine at Roberts International Airport in Liberia. Liberian Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman stated the shipment originated from Sierra Leone and was destined for Britain, noting a link to Leijdekkers.
