Sierra Leone validates national roadmap to combat digital fraud
Stakeholders in Sierra Leone have validated a national roadmap to combat the rising threat of mobile and digital fraud. The initiative, developed during a two-day consultative workshop in Freetown, was led by the Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Salima Monorma Bah, in collaboration with the National Communications Authority (NaTCA), the Bank of Sierra Leone, and the Financial Intelligence Agency.
To support these efforts, Orange Sierra Leone has launched a “Scam Alert tool,” which allows customers to report suspicious activity via their website or the short code *505#. CEO Aicha Toure emphasized that the tool is designed to strengthen consumer protection and reinforce trust in the digital ecosystem.
NaTCA Director-General Amara Brewah highlighted that digital fraud has evolved into a significant national security and consumer protection issue, involving tactics such as SIM swapping, phishing, and impersonation. The national roadmap aims to foster collaboration between telecommunications operators, law enforcement, and financial institutions to secure the country’s digital financial services.
