Sierra Leone digital fraud mitigation efforts

Overview

Sierra Leone has initiated a multi-sectoral response to combat rising online and digital fraud. Initially, the National Communications Authority (NaTCA) launched a nationwide consumer education campaign to warn against cyber-criminals using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to steal personal data and impersonate victims. To bolster consumer protection, Orange Sierra Leone introduced a “Scam Alert tool” allowing customers to report suspicious activity. NaTCA has characterized digital fraud, including tactics like SIM swapping and phishing, as a “significant national security and consumer protection issue.”
