Wildfires cause fatalities and massive land damage in Peru and Spain

Severe forest fires are causing significant loss of life and environmental damage in Spain and Peru.

In the Sierra Norte of Guadalajara, Spain, the La Mierla fire has affected approximately 32,000 hectares. While the situation is considered favorable and the fire has been controlled for several weeks, authorities remain on high alert for potential reactivations due to the specific type of vegetation in the area.

In Puno, Peru, a devastating wildfire in the Totorani sector has resulted in the death of an 81-year-old woman, Sebastiana Quispe Quilca. The blaze has consumed roughly 1,500 hectares of natural vegetation and pastures, destroyed homes, and killed livestock. Local firefighters have reported that their capacity is being pushed to the limit by the frequency and simultaneous nature of these fires, which are often attributed to human activity. The disaster has left several rural families without livelihoods, as they have lost homes, savings, and essential livestock.
