Overview

Severe wildfires have caused significant environmental and human impact in Spain and Peru. In Puno, Peru, a blaze in the Totorani sector killed an 81-year-old woman, destroyed homes, and consumed approximately 1,500 hectares of vegetation and pastures, leaving rural families without livelihoods.

In the Sierra Norte region of Guadalajara, Spain, the La Mierla fire affected between 32,000 and 34,447 hectares, much of it within the Sierra Norte Natural Park. The fire necessitated the evacuation of 34 municipalities and the confinement of 14 others. After 51 days of battling difficult weather conditions, including high temperatures and strong winds, the La Mierla fire was officially declared extinguished on September 4. The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha has since established a recovery plan to coordinate environmental, economic, and social restoration efforts.
