Sig Sauer develops M8 carbine to address U.S. Army feedback
Sig Sauer is developing the M8 carbine as a compact and lightweight alternative to the M7 rifle within the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program. The modifications are a direct response to feedback from soldiers regarding the performance and capacity of the current M7 system.
A primary update is the introduction of a 25-round magazine, replacing the 20-round magazine used in the M7. This change aims to mitigate concerns regarding reduced ammunition capacity; soldiers transitioning from the 5.56mm M4 system, which typically utilized 30-round magazines, saw their total combat load drop from 210 rounds to 140 rounds when using 20-round magazines. The new 25-round capacity seeks to bridge this gap.
Additionally, the M8 will feature a more rigid handguard to prevent flexing that previously interfered with laser alignment and nighttime targeting. The NGSW program utilizes the 6.8x51mm common cartridge, which provides higher kinetic energy than the legacy 5.56mm ammunition, though it is heavier. The M8 is currently undergoing soldier evaluations and must complete a full Army evaluation before official approval.
