US Army NGSW M8 carbine development and deployment
Overview
The U.S. Army is progressing with its Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program, specifically through the development and upcoming deployment of the Sig Sauer M8 carbine. Designed to replace the M7 rifle, the M8 incorporates design modifications based on soldier feedback, such as a shorter barrel, a fixed stock, and a more rigid handguard to prevent interference with laser alignment and nighttime targeting.
To address concerns regarding ammunition capacity, the M8 will utilize a 25-round magazine, an increase from the 20-round magazine used in the M7. This change aims to mitigate the reduction in combat load experienced by soldiers transitioning from the 5.56mm M4 system. The M8 is more than a pound lighter than its predecessor and utilizes the 6.8x51mm Common Cartridge.
The Army is scheduled to begin fielding the M8 to units, including those at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, this December. This rollout is part of a broader program that includes the M250 machine gun, which is expected to reach troops in the first half of 2027.
