Sigfrido Ranucci defends Report sources amid Minister Urso's Rai probe

Minister of Enterprises Adolfo Urso has asked the public broadcaster Rai to verify the truthfulness of the sources and the reliability of the consultants used by the investigative programme Report, presented by journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. The request triggered a strong reaction from the journalists’ union FNSI and opposition parties, who described it as an unprecedented attack on press freedom and the professional secrecy of reporters.

The controversy coincides with an ongoing criminal investigation into the 2025 attack on Ranucci’s vehicles in Pomezia. Prosecutors allege that four suspects, linked to entrepreneur Valter Lavitola, were involved in possessing explosives and committing aggravated damage through mafia‑style methods. Interrogations and environmental wiretaps are continuing, with investigators examining contacts between the suspects and Lavitola’s associate.

Ranucci has publicly warned that the premature leaking of investigative material from the prosecutors’ office could jeopardise the judicial process and fuel media sensationalism. The episode has revived a broader debate on the balance between investigative journalism, political influence, and the protection of sources in Italy.
