Sigi, Central Sulawesi quake leads to landslide pond cleanup and temporary housing program

A magnitude‑6.7 earthquake struck Sigi and surrounding districts in Central Sulawesi on 16 June, shaking Sigi, Parigi Moutong, Donggala and Palu. The tremor damaged 2,319 houses and affected 8,586 people, leaving three dead and dozens injured.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) accelerated the removal of four landslide‑formed ponds in the Nokilalaki area of Sigi. To protect the Lore Lindu National Park, heavy equipment will not be used; instead, pumps will drain the ponds, according to BNPB head Suharyanto.

BNPB also announced a temporary‑housing scheme for quake victims. Residents can choose to move into new shelters or receive a monthly cash allowance of Rp600,000 per household while they await permanent reconstruction. The assistance will continue until homes for heavily damaged houses are rebuilt, echoing similar disaster‑relief measures used elsewhere in Indonesia.
