Sikkim landslides and flash floods disrupt transport and force evacuations

Heavy rainfall and continuous landslides have caused widespread disruption across Sikkim, particularly in the Gyalshing district. While no casualties have been reported, the weather has triggered flash floods, damaged homes, and severed critical transport links.

In Gyalshing, at least 161 residents have been evacuated to emergency relief centers. In Rimbi, 128 people were moved to a local panchayat center due to rising risks from debris-laden water and landslides. The main RCC bridge at Rimbi was destroyed, and the Rimbi River has changed course, causing roadside erosion. Authorities are planning to construct a Bailey bridge at a higher elevation to restore connectivity.

Major road corridors, including National Highway 10, have faced temporary closures due to mudslides and rockfalls. Significant blockages have been reported at Bardang, Zin Khola, and the Dikchu-Singtam route. In Gangtok, mudslides have damaged parked vehicles and blocked roads near the High Court Fatak. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid active landslide zones and stream courses.
