Landslides and flooding in Sikkim

Overview

Heavy rainfall and continuous landslides have caused widespread disruption and flooding across Sikkim, with significant impact in the Gyalshing district.

Initial reports indicated that at least 161 people were evacuated from vulnerable areas, including Rimbi and Singlitam, to relief centers. Infrastructure damage included the destruction of an RCC bridge at Rimbi and the diversion of the Rimbi River, which caused roadside erosion. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) noted that debris accumulation in the NiK Kholsa stream created risks of sudden debris flows.

As the situation progressed, the scale of disruption expanded to include major transport corridors. National Highway 10 and routes such as Bardang, Zin Khola, and Dikchu-Singtam faced closures due to mudslides and rockfalls. In Gangtok, mudslides damaged vehicles and blocked roads. Authorities have planned the construction of a Bailey bridge at a higher elevation to restore connectivity, while advising residents to avoid active landslide zones and stream courses.
