Sikkim landslides and flooding force evacuations in Gyalshing

Heavy rainfall and fresh landslide activity in the Gyalshing district of Sikkim have forced the evacuation of at least 161 people from vulnerable areas. In Rimbi, 128 individuals from 28 households were moved to the Rimbi Gram Panchayat Kendra as a precautionary measure following flooding and increased landslide risks.

In Singlitam, seven households comprising more than 33 people, including children and the elderly, have been relocated to a relief center where essential supplies are being provided. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) reported that debris accumulation along the NiK Kholsa stream has obstructed natural water flow, creating a risk of sudden debris flows toward Rimbi village.

Infrastructure damage includes the washing away of an RCC bridge at Rimbi and the diversion of the main Rimbi River, which has begun eroding roadside land. The Roads and Bridges Department is working continuously to clear debris and restore connectivity. District Collector Tenzing Denzongpa is monitoring the situation, and authorities have advised residents to stay away from active landslide zones and river streams during heavy rain.
