Sikorski calls for stronger measures against Russian hybrid threats in Latvia

During a visit to the Ādaži military base in Latvia, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski and Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže emphasized the need for increased cooperation to counter Russian activities. Sikorski warned that Russia has returned to an imperialist ideology, presenting shared security threats to both nations, including airspace violations, the instrumentalization of migration, and sabotage acts.

Sikorski highlighted recent instances of state terrorism and sabotage, including a failed attempt to blow up a train in Poland and incidents in Germany and the UK. He called for stricter controls on the movement of Russian citizens within the EU, suggesting a requirement for biometric passports to hinder military intelligence operations, and a reduction in the number of Russian diplomats in the EU.

To bolster regional defense, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway are collaborating on air defense procurement, including the ‘Piorun’ system. Additionally, the Polish company WB Group is in discussions with Latvia regarding cooperation in drone technology. Both ministers stressed that while they do not seek escalation, they must act decisively to ensure effective protection against Russian threats.
