Silent Call phone scam uses silent rings to harvest data

The “Silent Call” scam involves callers who remain silent when the call is answered. By letting the phone ring and receiving a spoken “Hello?”, scammers verify that the number is active and can record even a brief response to create a voice profile with AI. The captured data is then sold on dark‑net forums and used in further fraud such as vishing attacks or AI‑powered voice cloning. Security firm Bitdefender advises users to hang up immediately, avoid responding, block the number and report the call.

Separately, consumers seeking to identify unknown callers can use online tools: a quoted Google search of the full number, reverse‑lookup services in telephone directories, or dedicated apps like Clever Dialer that list spam numbers. These methods help determine whether the call originates from a legitimate source, a telemarketing call centre, or a potential fraudster.
