Turkey advances major water and irrigation infrastructure projects
Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is advancing several major water management and infrastructure projects. A primary focus is the Silvan Project in Diyarbakır, which includes the Silvan Dam. Minister İbrahim Yumaklı announced that the dam's body construction is complete, with water expected to be held by September 2027. Once finished, the project will irrigate 2.35 million decares of land and is estimated to contribute 43 billion lira to the regional economy.
In Edirne, the Hamzadere Dam irrigation project is underway and scheduled for completion by late 2027, aiming to provide modern irrigation to over 81,000 decares of farmland. Additionally, the Ministry is addressing water security through the National Water Council, focusing on climate change adaptation, flood management, and the development of a Water Law draft. A digital Water Efficiency Information System has also been launched to track usage.
Other regional efforts include the fish stocking of 26 dams and ponds in Manisa to boost biodiversity, and infrastructure upgrades in Marmaris to prevent sewage overflows during tourism peaks. In Yozgat, the TULIP Project, funded by the World Bank, is being implemented to support agricultural development.
