Silver Diamine Fluoride Study Shows Promise for Preventing Childhood Cavities

A Phase III clinical trial led by Professor Margherita Fontana at the University of Michigan evaluated the off‑label use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) in 830 children under six across Michigan, New York and Iowa. Re‑application of the clear liquid every six months halted decay in more than half of treated baby teeth, offering a quick, painless alternative to drilling and anesthesia. The researchers noted the main drawback is the resulting black staining of decayed areas.

Separately, London‑based dentist Dr Neil Sikka of Bupa Dental Care highlighted the rising burden of tooth decay among children in the United Kingdom, citing 33,978 extractions in 2025 and increasing hospital admissions. He urged parents to start dental visits early, reduce fear, and maintain regular oral‑hygiene habits to prevent painful and costly treatments.
