Simone Gbagbo returns to France, offers pardon to Ouattara and France

Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, leader of the Mouvement des générations capables (MGC), has returned to France for the first time since 2011. During an interview with France 24, the former First Lady of Côte d'Ivoire stated that she has forgiven both France and President Alassane Ouattara for actions taken during the 2010-2011 post-electoral crisis.

Despite her message of reconciliation, Gbagbo issued sharp criticisms regarding her 2011 arrest. She alleged that the French military failed to intervene or provide protection during the incident, claiming she faced attempted sexual violence at the time. She remarked, “They did not lift a finger to help any of us.”

Politically, Gbagbo raised concerns regarding the ongoing detention of individuals she characterizes as “political prisoners.” She noted that approximately 1,500 people arrested in the context of elections remain in custody and highlighted the recent arrest warrant issued against Habiba Touré, spokesperson for former President Laurent Gbagbo. She also advocated for the creation of a new electoral body following the dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI).
