Simone Gbagbo political activities and reconciliation

Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, leader of the Mouvement des générations capables (MGC), has returned to France for the first time since 2011. In interviews with France 24, the former First Lady of Côte d'Ivoire expressed a desire for reconciliation, stating that she has forgiven both President Alassane Ouattara and France for their roles during the 2010-2011 post-electoral crisis.

Despite her message of forgiveness, Gbagbo criticized the international response to her 2011 arrest, alleging that the French military failed to protect her and stating, “They did not lift a finger to help any of us.” She also noted the presence of French forces and media during her detention, remarking that they observed her treatment without intervening.

On the political front, Gbagbo addressed her recent presidential election result of 2.4%, which she described as a “great disappointment.” She advocated for significant electoral reforms, specifically proposing the creation of a High Electoral Council composed of non-partisan members to oversee future elections following the dissolution of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI). Additionally, she raised concerns regarding the detention of approximately 1,500 individuals she characterizes as “political prisoners” and highlighted the arrest warrant issued against Habiba Touré, spokesperson for former President Laurent Gbagbo.
