Simri experts warn of masked nicotine addiction in adolescents

The Italian Society for Pediatric Respiratory Diseases (Simri) has issued a warning regarding the rise of nicotine addiction among adolescents through vaping and other electronic devices. During a national congress in Rome, experts highlighted the risk of ‘masked addiction,’ where even low levels of consumption—such as only two cigarettes per week—can lead to dependency.

Adolescents are particularly vulnerable due to their developing brains, which are more sensitive to nicotine. Pediatrician Maria Elisa Di Cicco noted that adolescent consumption is often intermittent and social, frequently involving flavored products, pod-mods, heated tobacco, or nicotine pouches. This pattern can make it difficult for young people to quit and may cause withdrawal symptoms, mood swings, or attention issues, even if they do not perceive themselves as regular users.
