Alma Rosa Rojo and daughter targeted in Culiacán shooting
Human rights activist Alma Rosa Rojo Medina, founder of the collective Voces Unidas por la Vida, and her daughter were shot by armed men in the Esthela Ortiz neighborhood of Culiacán, Sinaloa, on August 29. Rojo sustained a gunshot wound to the arm, while her daughter was injured by bullet fragments. Both were subsequently hospitalized and discharged.
The State Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into the attack for attempted femicide, exploring whether the violence was motivated by Rojo's activism in searching for disappeared persons. Amnesty International has called for a prompt, exhaustive, and impartial investigation into the incident.
Rojo has been a prominent figure in the search for missing persons for 17 years, a mission prompted by the 2009 disappearance of her brother, Miguel Ángel Rojo Medina. The Commission for Victim Assistance (CEAV) has contacted the family to provide institutional support and follow up on their medical and security needs.
