Sinaloa violent crime surge
Overview
On July 30, 2026, armed gunmen opened fire on a private vehicle in Escuinapa, Sinaloa, wounding a mother, her infant son and the child's grandmother. The mother, identified as Yuridia, was transferred to a specialized facility in Mazatlán for treatment, while the infant and grandmother were reported out of danger.
A few days later, on August 2, a series of murders erupted across Culiacán and Escuinapa. A 32-year-old man was stabbed to death in Culiacán, leading to the detention of a suspect. In the Escuinapa municipality, three additional killings were reported: a shooting, a decapitation involving an intimidating banner, and the discovery of a young woman's body near the Mazatlán-Tepic highway.
By August 11, the wave of violence expanded to include the abduction of María de los Ángeles Ruiz Salazar, a 35-year-old security officer for the Aguaruto Penitentiary Center, from her home in Culiacán. Further incidents in Culiacán included the fatal shooting of a 58-year-old mechanic and a shooting at a body shop that left one person hospitalized. In Guasave, a 35-year-old man was arrested for the alleged aggravated feminicide of his 98-year-old grandmother, who was reportedly attacked with a knife.
